Chapter 15
It had been a long day and I was more than happy finally to be home again. The first thing I did was enjoy a nice dinner, then take a detour and pay a visit to my litter box, and as I started to relax and wonder where Iâd take my first nap of the evening: on the three-seater sofa, the two-seater sofa or the armchair, suddenly Gran came in, followed by Scarlett and Harriet and Brutus, and said, âMax, Dooleyâfollow me.â
âBut I donât want to follow you, Gran,â I said as my first and natural reaction.
But Gran gave me one of those looks that made it clear that I had no choice in the matter, and so follow her I didâbut with extreme reluctance. I just wanted to nap!
Odelia and Chase, who stood preparing dinner, glanced up at this sudden intrusion into the peace and quiet of their home life, but didnât seem to have any qualms that their cats were practically kidnapped from under their very noses. In fact they laughed and Odelia quipped, âWorking up another one of your photo comics, Gran?â
âYeah, weâve already shot a lot so far, but for this next one we need Max and Dooley. You donât mind, do you?â
âBe my guest,â she saidâthe traitor!
âOh, by the way,â Gran said, âcould you have a word with Dan?â
âWhat about?â asked Odelia as she wiped away a tear. Donât think she was heartbroken to see her catsâ nap plans interrupted by Granâs megalomaniacal comic strip plans: she was simply peeling an onion, and it always has that effect on her tear ducts.
âWell, I thought about giving him the opportunity to publish our photo comic first. And he doesnât even have to pay us a lot. Letâs say⦠five hundred bucks a piece? Itâs a bargain, really, when you consider how much publicity it will give him to know that he gets the world premiereânot to mention bragging rights that he discovered us.â
âSure, Iâll talk to him. I donât know if heâll go for it, though. Dan isnât a big fan of comics in his paper.â
âAnd why not, may I ask? Itâs an established and beloved tradition.â
Odelia shrugged. âNot sure. I guess he feels itâs not worth the money.â
âNot worth the money! For a measly five hundred bucks a piece he gets first dibs on Harriet the Cat. The opportunity of a lifetime! His name will appear on our Wikipedia page as the first paper to publish us. That should be worth something, I should think.â
âLike I said, heâs not into comics. But it doesnât hurt to ask.â
âFine,â Gran grumbled, and stalked off, the rest of us in tow.
âSo what do you want us to do?â I asked, hoping to get this over with as soon as possible, so I could return to that very important choice I had to make: which couch would I grace with my napping presence first? The big one, the smaller one or the cozy armchair. I like all three of them for different reasons, which I wonât go into here, as it would lead us too far astray.
